Some of Auckland's Regional Parks are used to showcase sustainable farming. I met this herd of people friendly Hereford Cattle on the trail to Tokatu Point at the Tawharanui Regional Park. With more than 25 regional parks in Auckland, it is very difficult to decide to which one to head to any given weekend. At less than an hour drive north of Auckland, Tawharanui Regional park was the choice. It is very photogenic but a truly hair raising sight... The Wairoa is a dam release river that only runs 26 days a year.
When the river is full, the local youngsters take the opportunity to make jumps from either the bridge or the roof of the power station. The water was freezing cold the day I took this photographs.

Sulphur Point

Rotorua has a nickname Sulphur City, because of the hydrogen sulphide emissions, which gives the city a “rotten eggs” smell. The smell is especially pungent at Sulphur Point on Lake Rotorua due to the dense sulphur deposits in this area. You can see the almost white colour of the water. This is not too far away behind the Museum pictured in my yesterday’s post.

Tiritiri Matangi

The lighthouse at Tiritiri Matangi island viewed from Shakespear regional park at the tip of the Whangaparoa peninsula.

Tiritiri Matangi (”looking to the wind” or “wind tossing about” is one of the most successful conservation projects in the world. Unwanted predators have been eradicated, and the once-pastoral island has been replanted with native trees. Rare native birds and animals have been returned to its now-safe and restored habitats. Tiritiri Matangi is an open sanctuary.

One of New Zealand’s oldest working lighthouses, the Tiritiri Matangi Lighthouse is a heritage site. Built in 1864 of pre-fabricated cast iron, it was transported from Britain and erected in the spot where it stands today. Over the years the lighthouse has changed and adapted many times. It is now solar powered and fully automated.
